The Egg Bowl: Mississippi State VS Ole Miss

Updated: Nov 26, 2021

Ok, look, the name doesn't sound too threatening, I'll admit. It sounds like something a hungry 5 year old would come up with, but it is the name of one of the most vicious rivalries within College Football.

Mississippi State vs Ole Miss.

Not typically two mega powerhouses of the game, but that doesn't make the rivalry any less intense.

The game got its name in 1927 after the Golden Egg trophy was created due to, in 1926, a fight broke out when Ole Miss snapped a 13-game losing streak and fans stormed the field attempting to take down the goalposts. The trophy was presented from then on in an attempt to prevent future fights from breaking out. See, I told you this was an intense one.

Originally it was known as the Battle for the Golden Egg but, in 1978, the name The Egg Bowl was coined and has stood the test of time.

Last year, the Ole Miss Rebels came out with a 31-24 win, and also lead the series 63-46-6. Though Ole Miss have dominated in the past, the recent history has been a bit more sketchy, with the teams splitting wins in their last 6 meetings. One of those meetings was in 2019 where Ole Miss failed to convert a last second extra point allowing Mississippi to scrap away with that years win, but, having lost last year, you can bet they're going in hungry to take that Egg back. Whatever happens, there will be hatred, drama and a whole lot of anger, don't miss this gift of a game.

My pick? Ole Miss currently have Matt Corral, the QB many tout to go first off the board in this years NFL draft and they have a great coach in Lane Kiffin and I think they'll see through the craziness of this game. 24-10 to Ole Miss
